Fall 2013
Spring 2013
- Instructor: Beth Plale (plale)
- Sections: 28388
- Topic: Scientific Data Management
- Supplementary Description: Environmental sensors, genetic sequencing machines, and the Internet all contribute to big data scientific research, suggesting that data-driven research is the 4th paradigm of science. Large-scale digital data generated for science must be managed from birth to death, particularly as it is used in large scale mining and analytics. It must also be managed for access for decades into the future. We investigate these aspects in B669 Scientific Data Management and Preservation

Spring 2011
- Instructor: Melanie Wu (yuqwu)
- Sections: 15088
- Topic: Database Systems and Internal Design
- Supplementary Description: B669 covers advanced topics in the design and development of database management systems and their modern applications. Topics to be covered include database recourse management, advanced access methods, query processing and optimization strategies, advanced concurrency control and recovery techniques, data analysis on large databases. B669 will also cover some new trends in database applications, including data warehousing, data mining, semi-structured data management, OODB and ORDB.

- Instructor: Beth Plale (plale)
- Sections: 30690
- Topic: Scientific Data Management
- Supplementary Description: As supercomputers and modern scientific instruments allow scientists to generate data on everything from the human genome to the changing climate of our own planet, we find ourselves awash in computational data - a problem often referred to as the data deluge. Data produced by these technologies are precious and irreplaceable, holding the potential for greater scientific knowledge and understanding in perpetuity. In this seminar course we will explore multiple dimensions of scientific data management including issues at-scale and preservation and archiving.
